Waiting list for long-term care eliminated in Outagamie County

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - Officials in Outagamie County announce they're joining other counties by no longer having a waiting list for residents to be part of the state's long-term care program.

The program aims to allow older people who need care and those with disabilities to be cared for at home, rather than in more expensive nursing centers.

The wait list has been around for years, but grew when the state imposed a cap two years ago. Outagamie County's list grew to 330 by the time the cap was lifted a year ago. 300 in Winnebago County. 11,000 statewide.

"A lot of people made a difference to accomplish this, and we wanted to take a few minutes this morning, bring the group together and kind of reflect back on the work of the last 25 years. Look at how far we've come, and take this opportunity to say thank you,” Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson told FOX 11 Friday.

About 35,000 people statewide receive the taxpayer-supported care.
