Green Bay School District moves to lock all exterior doors

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Officials with the Green Bay School District are taking another step to increase security by locking all exterior doors to buildings.

District Director of Safety and Security Al Behnke describes what it means for parents and visitors starting Tuesday.

"They're going to need to go to the main entrance and push the intercom button," says Behnke. "Be allowed in by office staff, still be forced to go into the office and from there they will be able to do their business."

Behnke says so far, no one has complained. In fact, he says some parents have e-mailed asking that they move to this format of security and away from the policy adopted in 2009.

That protocol had entrances at most schools staying unlocked to allow visitors into a vestibule. Those doors to the main building were locked, and folks were forced to go through school offices to register and gain access to the building.

Behnke says it's part of a changing culture, in the wake of mass shootings like the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in December.

"Couple years ago it was more of an inconvenience or obstacle," Behnke says. "I think December 14th in Connecticut really changed all that."
