MADISON, WI (WSAU) - A Wisconsin state Representative wants food stamps to be used for good food and not junk food. Republican Rep. Dean Kaufert wants people to spend more of their aid on foods with better nutritional value. He has authored a proposal that supports such items as bread and soups, and less on snacks and chips. He wants the state Department of Health Services set up guidelines that require a certain amount of benefits be spent only on healthy foods. Critics say such requirements are unfair and probably wouldn't work.
