ASHLAND, Wis. (WSAU) - The Ashland County Board is looking to recoup costs of providing mining infrastructure by raising taxes on the proposed Gogebic Taconite ore mine.
Supervisors are asking Gogebic for a $100,000 initial payment to the county for expenses from improving infrastructure, and requiring the company to keep a $50,000 balance on hand in order to reimburse for any further expenses.
The measure passed 18-1. The only person to vote against it was Frank Kempf, who worries that the measures may convince Gogebic to move the mine to Iron County instead.
Iron County is also planning their own set of mining ordinances.
