BUDGET UPDATE: Assembly leaders ditch Racine County voucher expansion plan

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin Assembly leaders did a last-second flip-flop, and decided not to let 750 more Racine area school students get tax funded vouchers for private schools.

Speaker Robin Vos said Wednesday morning that the GOP leadership was scrapping a state budget provision that would have let current private school youngsters have vouchers, if the choice program is expanded to their schools for next year.

Also, a provision was eliminated that would have let parents of current voucher students keep their kids in the program, if they exceed income limits during the school year.

Racine was added to the 20-year-old voucher program in 2011. The proposals would have affected Vos’s home county.

Joint Finance co-chair John Nygren said the Racine County expansion was never meant to be in the budget. He called it a drafting error.

An Assembly vote on the budget was expected at 5 p.m. Wednesday. If that happens, the Senate will take up the package Thursday.
