De Pere residents asked for input on possible deer hunt

DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) - De Pere leaders are getting input from residents about a possible hunting season in the city.

A two-question survey is now online. And a bill in the state Legislature could make adding a deer hunt easier.

"To gauge the support and interest of providing a hunting program within the city limits," Marty Kosobucki, De Pere Parks, Recreation & Forestry director, tells FOX 11.

Kosobucki says the plan covers bows and crossbows only.

De Pere leaders say the survey idea comes from Assembly Bill 8, working its way through the state Legislature. In essence, the proposal would loosen restrictions on certain hunting within city limits.

"It eliminates the ability for a municipality to control that. People could in fact hunt within the city limits with a bow and crossbow, and I believe it's within 100 yards of any inhabited building," said Kosobucki.

If the Assembly bill passes, hunting could be allowed in De Pere's three largest public parks: the East Side Nature Park, Southwest Park, and the Preserve.

"I think our city needs to understand, the community needs to understand, that this is not something that is being pushed, it's just something that we're investigating," said Kosobucki.

You can still be part of the two-question survey until a week from Friday.
