85-year-old motivates family to run in Kalamazoo Klassic

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Shelbyville native Jerry Johncock set yet another Guinness World Record as he crossed the finish line of the half-marathon race held at this year’s Borgess Run in Kalamazoo. Johncock, who currently holds the title for the world’s fastest marathon over 80, also now is the world’s fastest half-marathon runner over 80.

With over 100 marathons under his belt, 85-year old Jerry doesn’t keep his love for running to himself. In fact, the marathoner has inspired 3 generations of his family to join the running movement.

Just this past weekend, Jerry’s sons, Bill and Mark, and two grandchildren, Drake and McKenna, participated in the Ann Arbor marathon alongside their grandfather at his 115th 26.2 mile race.

The Kalamazoo Klassic, set to take place this Saturday, will be seeing their share of Johncock representation as Jerry’s sons, grandsons, and even his wife will be taking part in the races. This will be Mrs. Johncock’s first 5K race.

The 85-year-old has no intention of slowing down saying he plans to run a marathon when he turns 100.  Johncock may be best recognized by his "Run With Jesus" sleeveless top that he dons frequently at races. Look for him and his family this Saturday at the Kalamazoo Klassic.

**UPDATE: For health reasons Jerry’s wife will not be running in the Kalamazoo Klassic, but plans to run her first 5K soon.
