MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - Lines at the DMV could be going a little quicker now that offices will be taking debit and credit cards.
The program rolled out in 15 offices in February after state statutes changed to allow for fees. DMV service director Kristina Boardman says law prevented the DMV from assessing any fees in person above the standard cost for a service. "Now all DMV offices accept the use of most debit and credit cards."
DMV offices will continue to take cash and check. Available credit cards include Mastercard, American Express and Discover. The DMV is still working out a deal to use VISA cards, but Boardman says a plan will be worked out in the near future.
All revenue taken in by the DMV goes to Wisconsin’s Transportation Fund which is used to pay for projects across the state. Service fees will be 50 cents at the minimum.
