"Fans First" promotion announced by Milwaukee Brewers officials

MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - They didn’t mean for it happen like this, but the Milwaukee Brewers are taking the money they’re not paying Ryan Braun during his drug suspension, and giving it back to fans.

Monday, the Brewers announced a “Fans First” promotion. It’s designed to thank the over 30,000 per game who’ve watched the last place Brewers battle through a host of injuries this season – and Braun’s suspension for violating baseball’s drug policy.

For all 12 home games in August, everyone will get $10 vouchers at the gate, to help them pay for food, merchandise, and tickets to future games at Miller Park.

The Brewers figure the total cost will be $3.6 million – or a half-million more than the salary that Braun’s not getting during his drug suspension.

Brewers’ chief operating officer Rick Schlesinger said the intent was not to offset Braun’s salary with the fan givebacks. He said the promotion has been in the works for several weeks, and the Braun suspension sped up the effort.

Brewers’ owner Mark Attanasio said last week that the team wanted to come up with something to thank for their loyal fans for their support. They said other promotions would be announced during August and September.
