No private schools have applied for newly-expanded voucher program

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - None of Wisconsin’s private schools have applied yet to take part in the state’s expanded voucher program.

The deadline to apply is July 26th, and the state Department of Public Instruction will announce on the 31st which schools make the grade.

Milwaukee has had the private school choice program for two decades. It provides tax-funded vouchers to low-income kids for attending private school as an alternative to public schools.

Racine began the voucher program two years ago.

Governor Scott Walker wanted to expand it to 9 other districts – but after a compromise with lawmakers, the choice program was expanded statewide with very limited participation.

Only 500 students can take part the first year outside of Milwaukee and Racine, and only the 25 schools with the most applicants can accept vouchers.

Interested schools must get two full days of training. State officials say it’s just now starting to be offered, hence the lack of applications at the moment.
