Wisconsin has nation's 7th biggest decline in new jobless claims

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin had the nation’s seventh-largest decrease in new unemployment benefit claims for the final week in June.

The Labor Department said Thursday that the number of seasonally-adjusted benefit claims in the Badger State went down by 1,284 from the previous week. State officials did not say why.

Thursday’s report covers the final week before the new state budget took effect. The budget makes it harder for recipients to keep unemployment benefits. Among other things, it forces them to look for 4 jobs per week instead of the previous two.

California had the nation’s largest decrease in new jobless benefit applications, with 9,300 due to fewer layoffs in service industries.

New Jersey had the biggest increase, with almost 6,100 caused by layoffs in transportation, warehousing, hotels, restaurants, and educational services.
