Mosquito season swarms in

MADISON (WRN)   While a relatively cool and wet start to summer has so far helped to keep Wisconsin’s mosquito population at bay, one bug expert says the break is over for southern parts of the state.

UW-Madison entomologist Phil Pellitteri says hot and humid weather in the forecast creates the ideal conditions for the annoying pests. He says the air on those days also tends to be ‘still’ around sunset, which is the ideal time for the insects to become active.

Heavy rains in June flooded many mosquito breeding areas and kept the populations down, but they apparently have dried out enough to foster a healthy crop of the pests. While you can use sprays and other steps to protect yourself, Pellitteri says sometimes the best thing you can do is to just go inside.
