APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - Authorities in Appleton say heavy rain overnight is the likely cause of a collapsed roof at a business on West College Avenue Monday.

Police say a 911 call was placed at 9:04 a.m. to Sign Works, 809 W. College Ave.

One person was inside the building at the time, but was not hurt.

"One of the businesses had experienced a partial roof collapse," says Sgt. Dave Lund of the Appleton Police Department. "It appears to be related to the heavy rains we received earlier this morning...it is a flat roof."

College Avenue in both directions between Bennett and Locust was closed for several hours as officials checked out neighboring buildings to make sure they were safe.

According to National Weather Service,  Appleton received about 2.18 inches of rain as of 7 a.m. Monday.
