APOSTLE ISLANDS, WI (WTAQ) - One of Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands is now closed altogether, as a hungry bear continues to make trouble.
National Park officials closed Sand Island to overnight camping on Monday, after reports that a bear entered campsites and ate people’s food.
On Wednesday, officials said a bear entered a beachside boat in search of food – so Sand Island is now closed to daytime visitors as well.
Superintendent Bob Krumenaker of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore says the island will stay closed indefinitely, and the situation will frequently be re-evaluated.
Sand Island is among 22 islands in the Apostles’ chain.
