Since news of a pilot for a potential spinoff from The Vampire Diaries officially being greenlit by The CW hit the web, fans everywhere couldn't hold back their excitement... and their hesitation.
The Originals, from TVD co-creator/exec-producer Julie Plec, will star Joseph Morgan's villain Klaus as well as series newcomer Phoebe Tonkin, who played werewolf Hayley in the first half of Season 4. The spinoff will focus on the fan-favorite family of Original vampires the oldest vampires in existence as Klaus returns to the supernatural melting pot that is the French Quarter of New Orleans, a town he actually helped build centuries ago. There, he is reunited with his diabolical former protégé Marcel. Now, many fans were a little disappointed that Klaroline (the shipper nickname given to the budding, complicated relationship between Klaus and Caroline) would most likely be split up, as well as the fact that TVD was losing one of its greatest villains to date. However, this next bit of casting news should have you jumping for joy and maybe jumping ship completely from TVD to The Originals.
Daniel Gillies is officially set to star opposite Morgan and Tonkin, Deadline reports. That's right Klaus's brother Elijah is back! And if you thought the brothers' relationship was strained enough already, get ready to see some more major sibling rivalry. Elijah, intent on helping his self-destructive brother find redemption, must side with Marcel's enemies in order to keep Klaus in line. We can already imagine the supernatural war brewing down in the South. But with this latest casting news come the big question: with Elijah fully on board for the spinoff, is there any reason to keep watching TVD? Let's be honest... Gillies was kind of the greatest part of the show.
The backdoor pilot will air on April 25. Plec will write the episode as well as executive produce The Originals (if it gets a series order) with Alloy Entertainment's Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo for Alloy, Warner Bros TV and CBS TV Studios. TVD showrunner Kevin Williamson, who is working on his Fox show The Following, is not involved with the spinoff.
