Budget cuts affecting Social Security office hours

RHINELANDER, WI (WXPR) -  Hours at Social Security offices around the country have been cut back.  Beginning this month, local offices are now closed for the day at noon on Wednesday. Previously, the hours had been cut from closing at 3:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the other weekdays.

A longtime Social Security administrator Webster Philips says the people at the local agencies are trying to do what they can, but Congress continues to cut funding.

Philips says that's a problem because the money to fund the local offices comes from the money that workers put into Social Security.  He says the agency would like to have most people switch over to online service, but he says they sometimes can't afford it.

Webster Philips also works for the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.

The office hours change affects all regional Social Security offices in Wisconsin, including Wausau, Wisconsin Rapids, and Rhinelander.

The other regional Social Security offices are in Appleton, Eau Claire, Fond du Lac, Green Bay, Ironwood MI, Janesville, Kenosha, La Crosse, Lancaster, Madison, Manitowoc, Marinette, Oshkosh, Portage, Racine, Rice Lake, Sheboygan, Superior, Waukesha, West Bend, and five Milwaukee area locations.
