MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - A hotline for Wisconsinites to report fraud in state government gets about the same number of calls each year – around 80.
The Legislative Audit Bureau says that the hotline received 162 reports of fraud in the two years ending last June.
The Bureau operates the hotline, and investigates the complaints which pertain to state government – and not all do.
The audit bureau said 112 of the 162 fraud complaints dealt with state matters. Thirty-four of them accused people of getting more benefits than what they were entitled to. There were also 34 reports of government waste, and 27 reports of mismanagement by state agencies.
The auditors said 46 of the complaints were resolved, and 38 were unfounded.
The other 28 are still being reviewed.
The hotline started in 2008. Here’s the phone number – 1-877-FRAUD-17.
Complaints can also be filed on the Legislative Audit Bureau’s Web site, accessible at Wisconsin-Dot-Gov.
