MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ) - A new sign ordinance has been adopted by the city of Marinette, which covers political signs.

This comes months after a federal lawsuit was filed challenging the previous code.

City code formerly required a permit and $15 fee for political signs. A resident, Kristin Abbs, sued in federal court in October , arguing that ordinance infringed on her First Amendment rights.

The city denied any wrongdoing.

City leaders last week passed a new ordinance that eliminates the fee and any reference to when the signs can be displayed, according to city clerk Jim Anderson. It went into effect Monday.

The federal court case is scheduled for a status conference February 7. Abbs' attorney, William McKinley, said a decision hasn't been made about the next step for the case.
