FENNVILLE, MI (WHTC) - There will be some bittersweet memories at Fennville High School tonight as the Blackhawks conclude their boys’ basketball season by hosting Bridgman. It was in this fixture nearly two years ago - March 3, 2011 - when star forward Wes Leonard hit the game-winning shot in overtime, and then collapsed moments later on the court, dying of a heart condition. The story made international headlines as the Blackhawks went on to win a state district title before falling in the regional semifinals to eventual Class C champion Schoolcraft. The Wes Leonard Heart Team Foundation has since raised funds to provide 85 schools and programs with automated external defibrillators and training for nearly 200 certified AED/CPR practitioners. Ironically, Bridgman High School was not listed on the Wes Leonard Heart Team website as having received one of those AEDs.
