BAYFIELD, WI (WSAU) - More snow and poor overall ice conditions have put the Wisconsin snowmobile death toll at 14 so far this winter.
Crews recovered the bodies yesterday of two men who died when their snowmobile went into Lake Superior near Madeline Island. They were on the same snowmobile Wednesday evening at about 9:30 p.m. A 9-1-1 call reported them missing yesterday morning.
The body of one man was found next to a partially submerged snowmobile in the water near the South Channel. The second victim was found about three hours later. DNR Wardens advise extra caution when riding at night, since it’s harder to see dangers like open water. Ashland County Sheriff Mick Brennan says names may be released later today after relatives are notified.
