St. John's homeless shelter asks to amend permit to serve more guests

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - St. John’s homeless shelter in downtown Green Bay is requesting to amend their conditional use permit to serve 84 guests.

The Green Bay Plan Commission meets Monday night to discuss and could vote on amending their conditional use permit.

Currently the facility, which is operated by the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay, is approved to serve 64 guests.

In December, the shelter was cited by the city for serving more guests than their permit allowed. However, the Diocese maintained that their conditional use permit allowed them to have serve overflow guest as per their operational plan that was approved by the Brown County Human Services that was part of their approved conditional use permit.

After being notified of being in violation, the shelter began to transport overflow guests to St. Norbert College, who opened their gym up until students returned from winter break.

The Diocese pleaded not guilty to the citation, and the city has been working with them to get into compliance.
