2 protesters arrested after barging into UW Board of Regents meeting

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Two animal rights’ protesters burst into a meeting of the UW Board of Regents Thursday morning in Madison.

The two men were taken to jail, and a UW official said charges of disorderly conduct will be sought.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said PETA – the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals – organized the protest. They claimed that the use of cats in the university’s research is cruel, and not scientific.

One man showed a picture of a cat with metal in its head, and a security official led the man out of the Regents’ meeting room. The other showed another photo of cats being used in research, as the man said “This is the pride of the university here.” The man went limp before police dragged him out.

The Journal Sentinel said the Regents appeared to be taken aback when the protesters barged in – but none responded to what the men were saying.

PETA requested a government investigation of the research last year – and it found that the UW did not violate protocol for the humane treatment of cats in its studies.
