APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - Police in Appleton say a ringing cell phone helped them arrest a suspect in an overnight burglary.
Police are called to the 1600 block of North Morrison Street for a report of a burglary just after 2:20 a.m. Tuesday.
The homeowner told authorities that people inside the house were awaken by noises being made by someone trying to steal a TV. When confronted, the burglar ran away. However, the homeowner discovered that a cell phone was missing.
With the help of a police dog, officers tracked shoe prints leading away from the house. The trail led to a home on the 1500 block of North Oneida Street.
Police spoke with several people there. During the investigation, an officer called the victim’s cell phone number and the phone rang in a coat pocket. Police then arrested 40-year-old Horace Fields. Fields is jailed on a probation hold as prosecutors consider charges.
