Obit: Former teachers union president Lauri Wynn, 83

MILWAUKEE (WSAU-Wheeler News)   Lauri Wynn, a civil rights activist who became the first black president of the state's largest teachers' union, died yesterday. Her daughter said the 83-year-old Wynn passed away at Milwaukee's Froedtert Hospital from complications of breast cancer. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Wynn used to be a Milwaukee teacher who was involved in the 1970's desegregation movement. In 1973, she became the president of the Wisconsin Education Association Council. Wynn later received the James Howard Baker Award which honors contributions to Milwaukee's African-American community.
