MEDFORD, Wis (WSAU) --
The man accused of driving drunk and killing a pedestrian near Gilman November 29th is out of the hospital and in jail. 42-year-old James Winchel of Sheldon appeared in Taylor County Court Monday, where Judge Ann Knox-Bauer set bond at $50,000 cash.
Formal charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and operating while intoxicated are being prepared by the district attorney.
A hunting party had left the woods and was alongside County Line Road near Miller Road when Winchel’s vehicle approached. Some hunters were able to get out of the car’s path. 53-year-old Fernando Salinas remains hospitalized at Aspirus Wausau Hospital in serious condition. 52-year-old Juan Salinas died at the scene. Both are from Roscoe, Illinois.
Winchel’s initial appearance for the charges is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on January 7th.
