GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - A popular big box retailer could be coming to downtown Green Bay.
Multiple sources have confirmed to WTAQ that Walmart is considering building a store in the Broadway District. The location being looked at is an empty space that is part of the vacant Larson vegetable canning buildings.
Investors have been in talks with On Broadway Inc., the managing organization for the city's business improvement district.
Walmart is reportedly going to be releasing a statement on the project.
Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt publically confirmed the rumor after hearing about On Broadway's plans Wednesday. However, Schmitt has said he doesn't think he can get behind the project.
Schmitt says he isn't against Walmart, just the concept of a big box retailer in the Broadway District. Schmitt is reportedly holding out for a Trader Joe's or a Whole Foods as a better fit for the empty lot and with development plans to the historic Larson canning buildings.
The Larson canning buildings have a lot of proposed development right now.
Titletown Brewing Company is proposing an expansion that would include manufacturing and bottling operations. A second phase would include warehouse style apartments.
