Arrests made in attempted robbery of Wolf's Grocery in Marshfield

MARSHFIELD, Wis. (WSAU) - Two teens have been arrested and charged in the failed attempted robbery of a Marshfield store.

Police Chief Gary Jepsen says their department arrested a 13-year-old Marshfield boy and 17-year-old Cordell L Ellingson from Arpin Wednesday. The Chief says the older youth will be charged as an adult. “The 17-year-old, because of his age, was taken into custody as an adult, was shipped down to Wood County jail, but he has since that time been released on bond. The 13-year-old has been referred to human services for charges.”

The masked 13-year-old was armed with a pocket knife.

The attempted July 15th robbery made national news, as 96-year-old store owner Margie Wolf from Wolf’s Grocery told the 13-year-old he could have Tootsie Rolls, but wasn’t getting any of the money. Jepsen says the public awareness and ongoing discussion of the crime made it very hard for the suspects to get away with it.

Both suspects have been interviewed by police, and have confessed to their involvement in the crime.

Ellingson is charged with felony contributing to the delinquency of a minor for encouraging the 13-year-old to commit the armed robbery.
