Gov. Walker won't reduce funding for UW-System; supports tuition freeze, cut

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Governor Scott Walker says he’s not going to try to reduce funding for the University of Wisconsin System despite reports of a huge surplus.

Walker says it’s his hope that money will be used to freeze or even reduce tuition.

A Legislative Fiscal Bureau memo last Friday said the system finished the most recent fiscal year with $650 million in reserves, including more than $414 million in tuition.

Republicans reacted with outrage since System President Kevin Reilly had said he was going to recommend a two percent tuition hike to the Board of Regents earlier that same day.
