MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Several months of negotiations results in a deal between Wisconsin utilities and the Environmental Protection Agency.

The agreement was filed in Madison federal court.

The utility companies will pay millions of dollars in civil penalties, pay millions more to fund a series of environmental projects and invest in solar power – then spend almost $1.2 billion adding modern pollution controls to aging coal-fired power plants.

The settlement focuses on Madison-based Wisconsin Power and Light, but it also involves three more companies.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says the agreement will improve the state’s air quality.

Part of the deal has WPL shutting down its coal-fired plant near Cassville.
