Woman gets a year in jail plus probation for causing baby's death

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - A southern Wisconsin woman has been sentenced to a year in jail, plus probation, for causing the death of her baby.

29-year-old Anne Olson of Prairie du Sac could have been sent to prison for 8 years. But Dane County Circuit Judge Stephen Ehlke said he was not certain what caused the death of 2-month-old Gabriel Olson, even after volumes of medical and scientific evidence were presented.

Anne Olson had pleaded guilty to second-degree reckless homicide. Her son died in August of 2011.

Authorities said Gabriel had multiple injuries to his head and abdomen, including rib and skull fractures.

The defense said Anne Olson fell asleep on a couch after drinking – and when she woke up, she picked up the baby and then tripped and fell over him.
