Wisconsin's high school graduation rate rises in 2012

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin’s latest high school graduation rate is up from the previous year.

The state Department of Public Instruction said Tuesday that 87.5 percent of students who started 9th grade in 2008 received diplomas four years later. That’s up from 87 percent for the 2010 and ’11 school year, and 85.5 percent the year before that.

Wisconsin now uses the federal standard of a four-year cohort method for determining its graduation rate. The comparison rates from the previous two years reflect that standard.

Like previous years, it shows that African-Americans lagged behind other groups. The DPI said the black graduation rate for last spring was 62.7 percent – almost 30 percent behind the 92 percent-plus for whites.

Almost three-fourths of low-income and Hispanic students graduated within four years. Rates for other ethnic groups were in the 80’s.
