SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ) - Members of a northeast Wisconsin Indian tribe will vote April 27th on whether to recall their leader.
Stockbridge-Munsee Tribal President Robert Chicks of Gresham has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges filed after he was stopped in Langlade County for a traffic violation on January 10th.
The Tribal Council decided not to act against Chicks for violating tribal laws. That triggered a recall campaign in which almost 200 people petitioned for an election.
Prosecutors said the 58-year-old Chicks drove without a license, and obstructed an officer by providing a false name.
He was also charged with misdemeanor embezzlement after he allegedly used a tribal credit card to post his bond. And a bail jumping charge was added after he failed to appear in court in mid-February.
