The Milwaukee Brewers were one out away from pulling to within three games of the playoffs and finishing a grueling 10 game road trip with a sparkling 7-3 record. A Carlos Gomez solo home off Matt Latos to lead off the third inning was still the only run on the board at the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati Thursday afternoon until the ninth. John Axford came on and promptly struck out the first two batters he faced but then the Reds struck hard. Todd Frazier launched a home run to center field to tie the game, Jay Bruce singled and Dionner Navarro ripped a triple. Game, set and match, the Reds beat the Brewers 2-1. The bullpen failures through July and early August derailed the Brewers season but it looked like they had turned it around during Milwaukee's dramatic climb back into the race. Fitting perhaps, a blown lead in the 9th brings perhaps the most painful and final nail in the post-season coffin. Milwaukee had only five hits in the game, two each from Gomez and Ryan Braun. The Brewers wrap up the season with a six game homestand begining the Houston Astros Friday night at Miller Park. Yovani Gallardo will be gunning for his 17th win of the year in the opener.
