SPARTA, Wis (WSAU) Five teenagers were injured when a firework exploded in the car they were riding it. One of the 17-year-olds was going to throw the lit firework out the window, but it went off sooner than expected.

The Monroe County sheriffs department says all of the people in the car suffered varying degrees of burns.

The driver managed to drive to a nearby hospital, where he's being treated. The four passengers were airlifted to other hospitals.

The incident happened around 4:30am Monday morning.
