MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - Three Republican U.S. senators said in Milwaukee Thursday that Democrat Tammy Baldwin is not qualified to be in the Senate – because she doesn’t understand how dangerous Iran could be.
Baldwin, the U.S. House Democrat from Madison, is running neck-and-neck with Republican Tommy Thompson for the state’s open Senate seat.
At a news conference Thursday, Senate Republicans John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and Ron Johnson criticized Baldwin for voting 4 times against tougher U.S. sanctions against Iran – with a goal of keeping that nation from building up nuclear weapons.
Baldwin did vote in favor of the stronger sanctions the last two times the issue came up. But her critics raised concerns after the Council for a Livable World – which opposes the sanctions – gave almost $60,000 to Baldwin’s Senate campaign.
Johnson, McCain, and Graham said her early votes against the tougher sanctions called her judgment into question – as well as her understanding of foreign policy.
The Baldwin camp did not immediately comment after Thursday’s news conference. But they have said that Baldwin has a consistent record of keeping Americans safe from terrorists.
The subject might come up Thursday night when she and Thompson take part in a televised debate from Wausau.
