GOP U.S. Sen. candidate Thompson: I won't try to end Medicare, Medicaid

MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - Republican U.S. Senate candidate Tommy Thompson says he will not try to end Medicare and Medicaid if he’s elected next month.

An opposing campaign ad showed Thompson telling a group in June that he would do away with Medicare and Medicaid. Thompson has said the remark was taken out of context.

And Friday, the former governor and Bush health secretary told the Milwaukee Press Club that he wants to save Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. But he said they all need adjustments.

A Marquette poll this week showed Thompson trailing Democrat Tammy Baldwin by 4 points – and there have been criticisms that he has not campaigned enough.

Friday, Thompson walked through his schedule for the next few days – and he said he has never taken a campaign for granted.

The 70-year-old Thompson also said nobody would ever be able to outwork him.
