The college basketball season tipped over this weekend and both the Green Bay Phoenix mens and womens teams earned hard fought victories on Saturday. At the Resch Center, Brian Wardle's third season as head coach began with a 72-67 victory over a surprisingly tough Chicago State club. The visitors raced out to a 13-0 lead before Green Bay rallied to close the gap to 33-30 at intermission. Kiefer Sykes scored a career high 31 points by hitting a school single game record 17 free throws in 19 attempts. Brennan Cougill added 10, center Alec Brown was held to just two points. Green Bay shot only 1 of 17 from three point range. The Green Bay women opened on the road for the 26th straight season in Kevin Borseth's return as head coach. The Phoenix defeated Northern Iowa 54-53. After leading by nine at intermission, the Panthers rallied to move in front 45-42 with under 9 minutes to play. Senior Adrian Ritchie saved her best for last, scoring 11 of the last 12 Phoenix points including a pair of three's late. She finished with 16. Sarah Eichler led #25 Green Bay with 17 points. Stephanie Sension added 13.
