GOP regains state senate majority

MADISON (WRN)  While Wisconsin Democrats had some big wins on the national stage in Tuesday’s elections, Republicans scored several victories in the state Legislature.

Unofficial returns give the GOP a 17-15 majority in the Senate, which is expected to grow to 18 seats after a special election in December. The state Assembly also remained firmly under Republican control.

Senate Republican Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) says it was a big night for their members. He says it will allow them to work with the governor and GOP-controlled Assembly to make sure a state budget is approved next spring that’s in balance and has no deficit.

Democrats held a one seat majority in the Senate for just a few months, following recall elections over the summer. Early results show them losing one of the seats they picked up in the recalls and another due to a lawmaker retiring.
