Fight against gypsy moth takes next step

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Another step is being taken in the fight against the gypsy moth.

Wisconsin agriculture personnel are placing about 19,000 traps in 50 counties throughout the Badger State.

Officials say most of the traps are being set in western Wisconsin, and they should be in place by early July.

The traps are designed to measure the population and locations of gypsy moths, and not to reduce or control their numbers. The information will help agriculture officials decide where to spray to kill gypsy moths next year.

The traps are shaped like tents and milk cartons. They pick up only male moths, because females cannot fly.

The traps will stay in place until the males stop flying in August. Gypsy moths are known to defoliate over 300 types of trees and shrubs.
