MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ) - It's Memorial Day weekend and people living along the Lakeshore spent Saturday honoring veterans.

The Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc hosted an event as part of the remembrance.

It's a day meant to honor veterans, crews and builders of the 28 World War II submarines constructed in Manitowoc.

The ceremony took place aboard the USS Cobia, a submarine that's docked at the museum. It included a wreath laying ceremony and a 21 gun salute.

Tirbute was also paid to those who served aboard the 4 submarines built in Manitowoc, including the USS Lagarto, that were lost in World War II.

"The importance of today is to remember not only those submariners who perished in World War II, but of course all of the fallen who've put themselves in peril for our sake and continue to do so even today," Norma Bishop with the Wisconsin Maritime Museum told FOX 11.

Names of the men who were on board the submarine were also read as part of the ceremony.
