It was split squad Grapefruit League action for the Tigers on Sunday. At Lakeland, Detroit doubled up the visiting Phillies 6-to-3. Tiger Starter Justin Verlander gave up a pair of runs on seven hits while striking out three in six innings. He retired 12 straight after allowing back-to-back rbi base hits in the first inning.
Meanwhile, at Tampa, it ended up a 1-1, ten inning tie between the Yankees and the Tigers. Duane Below, the 26-year old lefty who’s from Britton, Michigan in Lenawee County, started and gave up a run on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings. He’s one of three pitchers in the running for the fifth slot in the Detroit rotation. The Tiger’s Spring training record is 15-4-and-4.
