GAB forecasts recall election dates

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) – The director of the Government Accountability Board is recommending the board certify recall petitions against four Republican state senators, including Wausau’s Pam Galloway, when it meets on Monday.

Those challenges include arguments from senators that the petitions are invalid because people living outside of their new districts signed them and circulators were given an extra day to gather signatures. If the board accepts the recommendation, Senators Galloway, Scott Fitzgerald, Terry Moulton and Van Wanggaard will be unable to remove enough signatures to block a recall.

In a memo today, GAB director Kevin Kennedy also said he would ask the full board on Monday to seek a judge’s approval of a timetable for the Walker recall vote and up to five others. Kennedy says they’ll need more time to decide if there are enough valid signatures to order elections against Walker, Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch, and the four Republican senators.

The agency is still reviewing an estimated 1.9 million recall petition signatures. Their current deadline to verify the signatures is March 19th. Kennedy wants it extended to April 6th.

The first Election Day would be May 15th – either for primaries, or general elections if there are not at least two Democratic challengers to an incumbent. In the cases of primaries, the final votes could be held on June 12th.

Kennedy says local election clerks around the state overwhelmingly approve that timetable over four others – a couple of which would have had elections on the day after the long Memorial Day Weekend.
