MADISON (WSAU) A pro-life Republican has introduced a bill to create a Wisconsin license plate that says “Choose Life.” It would cost 25-dollars more than regular plates – and the extra money would go to a program that helps pregnant women, and promotes adoption over abortion.
Freshman Representative Andre Jacque of the Green Bay area hopes for quick action on his bill, as the Legislature’s about to adjourn for the year in two weeks. He says a “Choose Life” plate would be no different than the ones that recognize Harley-Davidson, the Packers, and the Free Masons. But pro-choice Democrats are striking back. Former Planned Parenthood executive Chris Taylor, a freshman Representative from Madison, has sponsored a bill to create a license plate that gives money to her old group. Taylor says “Choose Life Wisconsin,” the group to get funding under Jacque’s bill, is still in the process of being formed. And if lawmakers want to let motorists help pregnant women, they should at least choose a group that’s already established.
Jacque says half of the 50 states have “Choose Life” specialty plates. The state’s chapter is part of “Choose Life America,” which started pushing for such plates 15 years ago. Jacque says the ones in Florida have raised three-quarter-million dollars to help pregnant women.
