MADISON (WRN) Wisconsin authorities will be out in force this weekend looking for drunken boaters, as part of a national campaign meant to raise awareness about the issue.

DNR State Boating Law Administrator Roy Zellner says contact with those under the influence normally stems from other violations such as speeding. He says marine law enforcement officers are trained to recognize potential drunkenness and will administer the proper tests. The agency warns alcohol’s effects are greatly exaggerated by exposure to sun, glare, wind, noise, and vibration.

Last year’s Operation Dry Water enforcement campaign resulted in 14 arrests of boating under the influence in the state.

The campaign is Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
