SHERWOOD, WI (WTAQ) - Despite efforts to save him, a 42-year-old Illinois man drowned Saturday morning during the High Cliff Triathlon. Calumet County Sheriff’s Department says Doug Witmer was from La Grange, IL.  The drowning happened around 8 a.m. on Lake Winnebago during the first leg of the swimming, bike ride, and run event.  The 9th annual event held at High Cliff State Park is put on by Midwest Sports Events based in De Pere.  Emergency personnel, who are stationed at various points throughout the swim, pulled the drowning man out of the water and into a boat.  Race organizers say around 1,200 people participated in the triathlon. Authorities are investigating the death.
