DOUGLAS COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - One of two people killed in a snow-related crash in northwest Wisconsin was awaiting a federal prison sentence for running an identity theft ring.
41-year-old Frances Jones was one of 12 people indicted for stealing over $2 million by defrauding banks and stores, mostly in the Midwest.
Jones was facing up to 32 years behind bars, after she pleaded guilty two weeks ago in federal court in Minneapolis to conspiracy to commit bank fraud and aggravated identity theft.
She was killed last Friday on a street in the Village of Superior. Douglas County sheriff's deputies said Jones was a passenger in an SUV that collided with another vehicle in snow-covered conditions.
The SUV driver, 49-year-old Harry Wilson, was also killed. The crash remains under investigation.
