Colts fire vice president and GM

(Reuters) - One day after completing their worst season in 20 years the Indianapolis Colts on Monday fired vice president Bill Polian and his son and General Manager Chris Polian.

Both men had been with the franchise since 1998, and under Bill's direction the team drafted Peyton Manning and established the foundation for a team that made the playoffs in 11 seasons and captured the Super Bowl in 2006.

"It was a very tough decision for me," Colts owner and CEO Jim Irsay said in a statement.

"I had a chance to express to them, and Bill in particular how hard it was and the appreciation the franchise has for all that has been done.

"Obviously, (Bill) and I go back 30 years. So this is difficult, this is the tough part of this business."

With Manning sidelined for the entire season with a neck injury, the Colts hit rock bottom this past season as they lost their first 13 games and finished the campaign with just two wins, their fewest since 1991.

With the league's worst record, the Colts will have the first overall pick in the NFL Draft and many believe they will select top quarterback prospect Andrew Luck, signaling the beginning of a new era for the franchise.
