LITTLE SUAMICO, WI (WTAQ) - Seven people and one child are safe after a mile long chuck of ice breaks away on the Bay of Green Bay. Oconto County Sheriff Mike Jansen says the group was more than a mile off shore near Little Suamico off Geano Beach Road. Locals on shore called about a growing crack that was already 30 feet across. "From what we were aware of, they were unaware that they were in that situation." Jansen said. The Brown County's ice rescue boat was called in a little after 11:30 a.m. Jansen says two other fishermen were are still out on the ice on the section that is floating away. They decided to stay, and expected the wind to blow them back. The Coast Guard remains on the scene to assist. There are several ATV and ice shacks on the floating section. Jasnen says they get a ice crack in that area almost every year.
