The Oklahoma State Supreme Court has upheld a decision awarding Toby Keith 's family $2.8 million in the death of Keith's father, H.K. Covel. According to The Oklahoman , Covel was killed in a 2001 car accident in Oklahoma when a car allegedly hit his truck from behind, sending Covel's truck into oncoming traffic. A bus owned by Elias and Pedro Rodriguez , doing business as Rodriguez Transportes, struck Covel's truck almost head on and killed him.
The family's lawsuit alleged that the bus's brakes weren't working properly, and a jury initially awarded them the $2.8 million verdict and $5,000 in punitive damages. An appeals court reversed that decision, but the Oklahoma Supreme court is now standing behind the initial ruling.
