The Fox River Classic Conference boys basketball race featured heavyweight night on Tuesday. Front running and 4th ranked De Pere powered past third place and 8th ranked Sheboygan North on their home floor 70-55. The Golden Raiders were thinking upset after losing the first meeting at home in triple overtime back in December. North played like it was their last gasp for a conference title, taking a 36-28 lead into the locker room at halftime as senior Devin Yurk scored 16 points. The Raiders stretched the lead to 39-30 early in the third quarter before the Redbirds cut loose, outscoring them 40-16 the rest of the way. Brett Vandebergh led the scoring with 19 points while Jordan Poydras added 16, all in the second half. Defensively, the Redbirds clamped down on Yurk, holding him scoreless in the second half on 0 for 9 shooting, and they also shut down Ethan Guske, the leading scorer in the conference as he managed 9 points, most coming when the game was decided. De Pere improves to 15-1 and 11-0 in the Classic, North's hopes for a title are all but dashed at 14-3 and 8-3. Meanwhile at Bay Port, the 9th ranked Pirates avenged their only conference loss by beating Pulaski, ranked third in Division 2, 50-42 behind 19 points from Ryan Tachick. The Pirates remain just one game behind De Pere at 10-1 while the Red Raiders fall two games off the pace at 9-2 with five conference games remaining. Bay Port still has the Redbirds on the schedule at De Pere on February 17th.
